An Indonesia yacht charter on a phinisi means taking an entire crewed sailing vessel for your group across one of four main cruising grounds — Komodo, Raja Ampat, Bali and Nusa Tenggara, or the longer Banda Sea crossings — with cabins, meals, crew and route included in a single charter rate. Retreat Phinisi curates that collection so you can compare vessels and regions side by side before committing to dates.
What kinds of vessels make up the phinisi charter fleet?
Almost every private charter yacht in Indonesia’s island regions descends from the same tradition: the phinisi, a two-masted wooden sailing vessel whose construction knowledge comes from South Sulawesi and is recognised by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Contemporary charter phinisi keep the hull form and rig while adding air-conditioned cabins, en-suite bathrooms, sun decks, dive platforms and tenders. They range from small two-cabin boats to sixteen-guest yachts with spa areas, and that range is the reason the same region can feel completely different depending on which vessel you take.
| Vessel class | Guest capacity | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Small phinisi | 2–6 guests | Couples, short Bali and Komodo voyages |
| Mid-size phinisi | 8–12 guests | Families, friend groups, wellness retreats |
| Large phinisi | 12–16 guests | Multi-family groups, corporate retreats |
| Dive-configured phinisi | Varies | Raja Ampat and Komodo dive itineraries |
Which cruising region should you choose?
Region choice is driven more by how many nights you have than by which photographs you liked. Komodo compresses dragons, ridgeline views and reefs into three to five nights. Raja Ampat needs six to ten because its reef systems are spread across a much wider area.
Bali suits short voyages and travellers who do not want a domestic flight. Long crossings through the Banda Sea and toward the Moluccas are for experienced sea travellers with eight nights or more and a tolerance for passage days.
- komodo private cruise — highest impact per night, departs Labuan Bajo
- private raja ampat cruise — richest reefs, longest commitment, departs Sorong
- bali phinisi charter — easiest access, day charters possible
- Banda Sea and inter-island crossings — remote, seasonal, long-range
How is a charter rate structured?
Phinisi charters are quoted for the whole vessel per night, not per person. That means the same boat costs the same whether two or twelve of you are aboard, which is why groups filling more cabins get better value per traveller.
Rates move with the vessel’s size and specification, the season, and the length of the voyage. Peak months and year-end holidays sit at the top of the range. National park fees, permits, diving, premium beverages and land transfers may sit inside or outside the rate depending on the vessel, and every quotation we send states exactly which side of the line each item falls on. We do not publish fixed price lists, because a rate that is accurate for one vessel in one month is misleading for another.
What is standard on board across the collection?
Certain elements are consistent across serious charter phinisi, regardless of vessel size or region.
- Exclusive use of the whole vessel with no other guests
- Permanent crew including captain, deckhands, chef and activity guide
- Full board with meals cooked fresh on board and dietary needs accommodated
- Snorkelling equipment, tenders, and paddleboards or kayaks on most boats
- A route planned in advance and adjusted daily by the captain for sea conditions
What differs is the equipment layer: dive compressors and tank storage, spa or massage areas, jacuzzis, water toys, generator capacity for reliable air conditioning, and satellite communication. Those differences decide which vessels make your shortlist, and they are the first thing we confirm.
How far ahead should you book an Indonesia yacht charter?
The best vessels for peak dates are held six to twelve months out, particularly for year-end, Easter and the northern summer holidays. Three to six months is comfortable for most other periods, and shorter lead times can work when a vessel has a gap between charters.
Because availability is the binding constraint rather than price, the fastest way to a real answer is to send dates first. We check which vessels are genuinely open for those nights before discussing anything else, then set out how holds, deposits and bespoke package building work for the vessel you choose.
Who is Retreat Phinisi?
We are an independent phinisi charter specialist. We are not the owner, official agent, dealer or partner of any shipyard, hotel group, airline or resort, and we do not present ourselves as affiliated with the brands guests may encounter during their trip. Our role is to shortlist vessels honestly, tell you what each one actually offers, and arrange the charter end to end.
Frequently asked questions
Is a phinisi charter priced per person or per boat?
Per boat, per night. The charter rate covers exclusive use of the whole vessel with its crew, so it does not change when you add a guest to an existing cabin. This is why cost per traveller falls sharply as a group fills more cabins, and why couples generally charter smaller vessels. Park fees and some extras may still be charged per person on top.
Can we charter across two regions in one trip?
Sometimes, but it depends on repositioning. Moving a phinisi between cruising grounds such as Bali and Komodo takes days of sailing, and those passage days are part of your charter. Groups with eight nights or more can plan a genuine one-way crossing; shorter charters are much better spent inside a single region. We flag repositioning cost and time before you commit.
What happens if weather disrupts our itinerary?
The captain reroutes. Sea state, wind and current decide what is safe on any given day, and captains regularly swap anchorages or reorder days to keep a voyage comfortable. This authority sits with the vessel’s master and is not negotiable, because it is a safety function. Serious weather events can shorten or cancel a departure, and each vessel’s own charter terms set out how that is handled.
Do you arrange flights and hotels as well?
We coordinate charter timing around your travel plans and advise on realistic buffer days, but we do not issue airline tickets or guarantee third-party accommodation details. Airline schedules and hotel policies belong to those companies and change frequently. Book flights and hotels directly, then send us the confirmed itinerary so we can align embarkation and disembarkation.
